Victoria, Michele, Scott, Walter and James rolled out from
the Sears parking area north bound for Woodard Bay on the Chehalis Western
trail. It was a beautiful morning-sunny, a touch cool but none the less
gorgeous. We cleared the I-5 and Martin
Way bridges without a hitch and settled in to chat with each other. The pace
was easy and there was time to look around at the variety of vegetation along
the way. Fellow travelers, whether on bicycles or walking canine companions,
exchanged greetings with us. At our first crossing point at 26th Ave,
we discovered there were renovations underway. The old fencing was gone and new
berms were in place. Two workers were busily smoothing the area at South Bay
road.
Blackberry bushes were in bloom, and in one area, cherry trees
had unripe fruit. Walter believes these were choke cherries…as the name
implies something to make you choke when eaten. There were two small lakes
nearly covered with huge water lilies, and we could hear various birds chirping.
Although we did not see any horses, they left ample evidence of their passing.
Before too long we’d reached our destination of Woodard Bay-the northern end of
our ride. After a short picture snapping session, we headed back south. After
returning to our starting point Walter read off the magic numbers on his
odometer. Distance 11.9 miles, average speed 11mph, time just over an hour.
